Sestroretsk was first mentioned in Swedish chronicles (Swedish name - Systerbäck)



Peter the Great sent a team of officers to explore the area along Sestra River.



Construction of the Sestroretsk Arms Factory began



A wooden church by the name of Peter and Paul was built on the territory of the arms factory. It was damaged in a fire on the 4th of January 1730, and was restored in a different location. In 1782 this church was rebuilt into a stone cathedral.



Nikolskaya church was constructed



Nikolskaya church was completely restored. Restoration work begins on the Peter and Paul church and it becomes known as one of the most beautiful buildings in Sestroretsk.



Sestroretsk had its own telegraph, three hotels, arms factory, military hospital and children's hospital with a pharmacy.



The Ministry of State Property gave out a piece of land for creating a resort for the capital - a wonderful natural beach with golden sand, grand dunes and huge pine-trees.



Sestroretsk had ten Orthodox churches, a Lutheran church, a Roman-Catholic church, several orphanages, two small Jewish cemeteries and one Orthodox cemetery.



Sestroretsk received its
status as a city.



A famous Russian comedy writer Michael Zoschenko lived in Sestroretsk at 14-a Polevaya St. There he wrote his novel "Before Sunset". The writer is buried in the Sestroretsk cemetery.


There was a battle on the bank of Sestra River between Russian troops led by Peter the Great and Swedish troops led by Kronoirt.



Peter went to explore the area of Sestra River himself. He order to build first a dam, then a harbor, and then a two-storey palace there. This palace became the tsar's summer residence.



The peasant Efim Nikonov created the first known prototype submarine and its testing took place on Lake Razliv located directly opposite the factory



Peter the Great attended the grand opening of the factory.



A huge fire destroyed both churches as well as most of the buildings of Sestroretsk.



The Primorskaya railroad connecting Saint Petersburg to Sestroretsk was completed.



A proposal was made to give Sestroretsk city status. The proposal was denied by the Government.



The first resort complex on the bank of the Finnish Gulf was constructed. It consists of several clinics, a pine-tree park, an expensive restaurant, and a big concert hall. It' was said that flirting was the major occupation on the resort, and not medical treatment. Among the famous people who visited the resort were Leonid Andreev, Maxim Gorky, Leonid Sobinov, Alexander Block, famous singer Shalyapin, as well as several others.
Today there are many resorts and health centers in Sestroretsk.



Sestroretsk workers took an active part in the revolutionary movement by hiding Lenin and providing him with food and shelter. It was in one of these hiding places where Lenin wrote his famous work "State and Revolution"



All but one of the city's churches were destroyed by the communist government.



Located on the Finnish Gulf, Sestroretsk is a popular vacation destination for people from the surrounding area. Many people have private houses or vacation houses (dachas) in Sestroretsk.
